Revamp Your Living Space for Lunar New Year 2025
The Lunar New Year has always been a time that I look forward to when I have to change the interior designs of my home. It’s always so uplifting to begin the year with a fresh and clean house that seems primed to embrace all the positive events of the year. Let me take you through how I do this in my own home – it’s easy, enjoyable and meaningful.
● Clear the Old to Welcome the New
Some of my favorite things that I plan to do before the Lunar New Year starts is cleaning. And it is not just about cleaning, it is actually like hitting the reboot button over your home. I like to begin by targeting a segment and see where you can head with it—whether it’s the living room, the kitchen or even that dreaded lovely junk drawer we all know exists.
It declutters the freezing space to pave the way for the energy of the New Year. In my practice as a space planning expert in the Bay Area, I’ve realized that changes in the configuration of a room can dramatically alter the nature of the environment.
● Play with Festive Colors
As always, the traditional colors of red and gold dominate the Lunar New Year festivity and celebrations. However, I don’t like it when my space is filled with such bright colors too frequently. But still, I incorporate them as decoratives.
To maintain equilibrium, I then use the opposite and include anthems that use soft pastel colours such as beige or cream. For instance, a red blanket over a colourless couch is exciting enough yet doesn’t take over the whole place. It is always about that fine line between tacky and classic.
● Bring the Outdoors In
My tradition of decorating our house during the Lunar New Year wouldn’t be complete without fresh flowers and some plants. Not only do they look elegant, but they also attract good energy within the house. I have always tended to get either plum blossom or cherry blossom – they are classics and elegant.
Small citrus trees or lucky bamboo are also very appropriate and do not require much attention. Just put such natural elements in a few plain vases or pots and, can bring any space to life, immediately.
● Rearranging for Good Energy
There really is nothing like the pleasure of the shift whether about changing the character of a room. I like to think about how my family and guests will use the room—ensuring there’s plenty of space to move and seating for everyone.
In the several layouts I design as a home decorator in Bay Area, giving the place functionality that appears uncluttered is very important. The smallest adjustments for a room, for example, moving a chair or placing a side table, can jump-start major changes.
● Set the Table for Celebration
The dining table itself is where so many of the good Lunar New Year experiences take place. I love creating a setup that’s simple yet meaningful. A red table runner paired with gold napkin rings or small bowls of mandarins instantly feels festive.
Once at a dinner for guests, I did leave little potted plants at every guest's place as a favour to take home – that was raved about! These are some of the small personal decisions that make the celebration very unique.
A Fresh Start
For me, designing for the Lunar New Year isn’t about clean lines and perfect order… it’s about having a home that’s prepared to embrace new possibilities. Just putting out thoughtful touches, moving furniture, and incorporating cheerful accents, I always get the feeling that I’m creating a positive atmosphere for the rest of that year. So, how would you like to improve your space for Lunar New Year 2025?
